My Review:
There is something awesome going on when you pick up a book and know that it's filled with stories and illustrations done by people that worked their tails off to enter into a contest and actually get published. I know all the work that goes into not only the writing, but also the compilation of these works, so kuddos to both the writings and Galaxy Press!
The first impression from this book is obviously from the cover. You know that it's going to contain some awesomeness. I have to admit, I flipped through it first before I cracked it open to read it. I fell in love with the illustrations and the titles of the stories... "Robots Don't Cry," and "Giants at the End of the World," caught my eye right away.
Of course, I wanted to skip around the book when I did open it, but I knew if I did that, I'd probably forget and not read them all... the true problem with reading an anthology. Instead I dove in and started at the beginning. Intro wasn't too long, a huge plus.
I really liked how a lot of the stories seemed to have an underlying message that actually means something today like remembering how important it is to protect what natural resources we have (both mineral and animal), or finding the light in the dark, and a general sense of hopefulness.
You get a nice mix of newer writers, illustrations, and even established writers. It provides a great read throughout the book.
I think this is a great read for anyone looking for some good sci-fi and fantasy reads. It is definitely worth it to check it out.
