Here's what I discovered. It was a lot easier to get my 2 year old to sit down and watch a movie in another language than it was my 6 year old. He kept telling me he didn't speak French- but he liked listening to the CD. My daughter really liked the little mouse. She repeated some of the words and was quite happy talking to the lady and mouse (as you can see from the photos!).
We've only watched it twice now... but the fact that she was willing to repeat the words was a lot for me. I caught my son getting sucked in as he walked by a couple of times, so I have to believe that if I just left it playing randomly all day, he would eventually watch the entire thing.
The CD is great. It even has some of the songs that my maman taught me when I was little- songs that I've been singing to my kids since before they were born and songs that I sang to my maman as she was passing from this world. They were a bittersweet treat for me.
The DVD is great because it has music and repetition- both are key things when getting kids to want to be a part of something. I think that if we sit down with it every few days, my daughter would say some of the words regularly. We already have random French thrown into the mix at our house because I grew up with it in the house so I automatically resort to it in key moments (especially if I'm upset!).
I definitely recommend this for people with younger kids. I think the older a child is, the harder it is for them to be introduced into another language in the way the DVD does it. I'm not sure because I've not tried the other way with my son. But this is a wonderful product from a wonderful and friendly company!
